Podcast about voluntary simplicity – living a simpler life in rural Nova Scotia, Canada through choice (and financial necessity).

We used to have jobs, a mortgage, city life, stress, Ikea, broadband, healthcare, English tea bags, - now we have less of all of those and none of some. We have moved from a 1930’s surburban semi to an 1830’s rural farmhouse.

We are English men in New Scotland.

Soundseeing tour of our garden

Our visitor and how great it is to have met a previous owner – new information – one room school, military store, lots more buildings on the plot. Then we found remnants of two.

boo not first to leave a comment for you comment junkies.
Good idea the audio tour combined with pictures got a good feel for your place. (We are all nosey at heart).
Matt the opening was almost scripted could have been the opening to a film or a soundbite for an "upcoming new series"
Farmers almanac i want one ill search online planting dates and frost dates is something im going to have to get to grips with. AJ are you considering a polytunnel to hasten the growing season. As soon as you mentioned proximity cable tv i thought excellent broadband on the way my hopes were dashed for you. RE dog as you said certainly not a decision to be taken likely i know our dog has curtailed impromptu we's away in hotels or with certain friends. Amazing how many people shudder at the thought of a dog in their house. Another great podcast thanks.

Does the FundyWeb broadband project not cover your area? http://www.fundyweb.ca/index.php?lang=1&page=4

I am not sure what has happened to Fundyweb. The Western Valley Development Agency which co-ordinated it has been shut down and the website seems to be dormant. Such a great idea and we would be covered by one of those pulsing blobs too.

I want to bounce Wifi or Wimax from Bridgetown off the Hydro tower on the hill to rain glorious broadband down on the valley.. fly my pretties.. fly.

But alas so far I am still sitting here with 42k ropey connection. At least we uploaded the podcast first connection though.

Mark - would you like us to buy the Almanac and post it?

Yes, AJ wants poly tunnels - need to find a good supplier (cheap).

And finally yes, the opening was scripted - I wrote it down first as unfortunately I am not that spontaneous in the podcast.

so so jealous to listen to your walk around.

We've gone for the head house, which is 5 minutes from college and Gemmas work. Still, nice 1910 house, but just a small back yard.

Keep looking on MLS for the next house.

Maybe have to visit some time. Exploratory dig is a must I think. I'm also a fan of time team.

Well next week the 45 minute commute to AJ's college starts (180 minute drive a day for me) - so we may get very jealous of your 5 mins from college - and you have broadband too if I remember correctly - certainly miss that.

Thanks for the congrat's C - was great to see you today.

I had to dash off though as I had an appointment to take my driving test - only booked in last night as I did the theory yesterday and phoned for an appointment - today or 26th September! Luckily I passed so have a nice new NS driving licence.. and don't have to stop driving after our 90 days in Canada.

I think we will have to podcast and record our "big dig" in the back yard - Downshiftme.com meets Time Team!

Hey Guys!

Out of curiosity how do you plan to clear snow from that 400 foot drive way? Maybe you said something in the past and I missed it.

Good luck on getting wireless internet! We shoot ours 13km to a water tower, it then hops and skips about 40km to a wired connection.

Hey Andrew, I need to go to the library and catch up with some podcasts, I haven't downloaded Geek.Farm.Life in a while I must admit. I will download some dialup ones. Our connection often drops at 80% so may get the first bits at least!

Yes, your wireless connection inspired me - wish someone would do that here. Our Hyrdro electric tower is a big water tower on the mountain - ideally placed. 13km is quite a hike - we would only need a bounce to about 5km and then hop another 5km to somewhere with broadband. Is yours Wimax or Wifi?

Drive clearing - the previous owner had the woodman clear it - we have ordered wood and so when he comes I will see if he is still doing it. I think we are looking at someone else doing it rather than DIY. DIY option seems really expensive.. and don't fancy shovelling 400 ft!

Hey Matt,

Our wireless in neither. we're using motorola canopy equipment. There's a bunch of companies with point to point, and point to multipoint out there. The canopy equipment seems to work well on longer distance links, though it does have some high lantency.

802.11 really breaks down on multi-point long distance links, it's just not made for that. Wimax or 802.16 isn't deployed anywhere I know of.
