Podcast 36

Thank you for all the concern about my sanity.

Got my work permit
It’s a SIN
First person to ask if I know "so and so"
Job hunting started in earnest – 4 jobs applied for so far - very ecclectic mix
www.jobbank.gc.ca a lot better than monster.ca

Saying “stuff” hitting the fan is “very CBC” according to Shelagh Rogers on Sounds Like Canada

Hat poll – choose a downshifting hat/beanie/toque/toboggan from this link - scroll to hats.

AJ thinks Dylan decided on what we talk about on the podcast. Dogcast.

Plumbing effort update – it worked – no leaks but we do need to possibly get a finer filter. Ground floor, first floor or first floor, second floor. Tomato two-mate-oh.

Dylan contributes to the podcast for the first time.

Jill Barber – playing the Fav (and everywhere else in the UK/Canada and also in Ireland). Like the track Hard Line – very catchy.

Frappr (see link on the right) - we have 34 Frapperistas.

Friends listen so I can't tell them what we have been up to.

Subscribe with your email address to DSM (see the box on the right). AJ nods.

Bad things
AJ – muscle aches - lack of fitness. Or Matt thinks muscles ache not because of fitness but due to using new muscles. AJ does a Charles Atlas pose, then Bruce Forsythe
Matt – stop signs - there are too many in Canadia - although I may be the only person who stops. More roundabouts and more yielding! (and also – too sticky labels - take a leaf out of Ken Morrison's book - good labels - Matt needs to get out more)

Good things
Matt – call centre Blue Cross people who deal with inquiries for MSI - excellent customer service
AJ – amazon.ca - $70 down to $25 for a text book. We also bought DVD's and books with a wedding present of Amazon.ca vouchers. Also AJ's slippers.

Also forgot to mention:
Bought insulated wellies, work shirts, thermals, Matt has a work jacket
We played frisbee and AJ wore wellies strung together
I also started digging garden

Sorry for the rambling.. may be better next week.. but probably not.

Just came across your podcast while surfing podcastalley. A belated welcome to Nova Scotia, you're going to love being a valleyite, just wait for a few more weeks when the leaves change!

Don't freak when you experience you first "Fundy Flurries" ... did anyone tell you the valley gets heavy snowfall? park your car at the end of your driveway so you can shovel out more easily the next morning... Grab some X-Country skis, Canadian Tire usually sells some cheap ones or check http://www.nsonline.com/bbs/ikonboard.cgi
its a NS Online Classified site.

Ok below are some ... least in my mind ... highly useful NS Websites. If ya have 'em already, my apologies for tossing a bucket of old info at ya.

BEST shop for computer wares in the Valley:
http://www.brucesonline.com

Local Radio Station's site, they run a trading post every weekday, items are also listed here on their website, in case you miss the broadcast. You can email/phone in things you want to sell too:

http://www.magic949.ca/fileupload/store/regular_tradingpost.htm

The most accurate local weather site, from Environment Canada. From reading your site, sounded like you guys are down near Anna Royal, so thats the link, but you can change it to another town by clicking the 5 day forecast link to the left:

http://weatheroffice.ec.gc.ca/city/pages/ns-2_metric_e.html

I saw you mention Amazon.ca, Chapters is another bookstore with online ordering. Myself, I find them to be slightly cheaper with books, tho more expensive on dvds/cds. They too have free shipping on orders over $39:

http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/home

Sears.ca's discount site...you can also pick up a free catalouge from your local sears outlet. I imagine your postal mailbox is getting over run with their mini-sale cats already.

http://www.sears.ca/gp/home.html/002-5926094-2256050?lang=en

I don't know if you'll need it, but I'll give it to you anyway, Athabasca Univeristy in Alberta offers all their courses by correspondence. Their courses are fully accredited university courses:

ps: the secret to staying warm in the dead of winter is to wear layers of clothing, not just one large bulky something. Also winter boots that are slightly large for you so that your feet have room with 2 pairs of socks. Proper socks, not flimsy dress socks.
What you really need to buy yourselves are a good pair of Sorel winter boots, with rubber bottoms and removable felt liners to keep your feet warm and dry. Tho your wellies should be good too, loads of farmers spend all winter in them.

Have you two been to Frenchy's yet? You must of been, if not go NOW! Its a NS cultural must-do. Besides you can find some great cheap clothes there. Bought a winter jacket at the Digby one last month for about $10 dollars.

oh, and don't forget your car will need winter windshield washer when the weather gets colder ... I don't know if you have that stuff in the UK.

Sorry! I just picture you two as having no experience with real winters, wind chill factors and such... no offense intended.

Anyhoo, best of luck. Glad you picked here to settle, happy to have more valley folk.
Look forward to the next podcast.

Cheers, Heather

I think you need some rabbit fur hats and mittens :D (think you would both look cute in them!!)

Heather- good point about the car....we did that at our last place and it made it so much easier as there was never more than a couple of feet to dig out after a heavy snowfall which wasn't any hardship really.
