Renovations Update

Well we hoped it would happen in May, then June, July, August and eventually in September work started on our new roof.

When they started repairing the back roof, they found some horrors in our bathroom dormer.

But this was skilfully put right by our roofers

We have some nice new skylight windows and a completely rebuilt chimney too.

A little finishing off outside and then the work will now move inside to take down the old lathe and plaster walls and ceilings in the front part of the house upstairs, fit insulation and then drywall them.

The work on the bathroom dormer has disturbed the tiling in the upstairs bathroom - so that refit is now brought up the agenda too (which we will have to do ourselves due to cost) and then next summer we have to paint the whole outside of the house.

We are still alive, keeping busy and still in Nova Scotia.

Thanks for the update. The new roof looks great! It's always nice hearing what you are up to. I hope you enjoyed your Canadian Thanksgiving!

Hello! We are moving to the Annapolis Valley (Upper Granville) in 7 weeks...so exciting. I'm a native Nova Scotioner, Brian is born and bred Essex boy (but not a wide boy..hahahah!) I am interested to read you are tearing out your lathe and plaster walls, we are thinking of leaving ours and putting in cullulose and then RX board on the interior. Would appreciate your views. Thanks! - Jenn.

We left the lathe and just got rid of the plaster in the end and the new drywall is over the top (with rockwool behind).

Your suggestion is certainly another option. Because we were fitting three skylights and wanted to insulate from the inside at this point (we were in early winter when we did it) we went the drywall route.

If you are moving to an old house in UG I would recommend talking to a heritage contractor in Bridgetown who is doing some other work for us in April. I think he has kept lathe and plaster in his own house which apparently looks great.

I can always email his contact details if you would like them.

Regards,

Matthew

Ignore the question about the older property - just looked at your blog - what a beautiful place. Ours is a bit more modern at 1830s although our contractor thinks it may be 1780s.

Hi, Matthew: Thanks for your reply. We would love the details of your contractor. The poor old house looks a bit bereft right now, without grass, lilac bushes gone and perched up high...porches and landscaping will help, but that will take time. Our mantra is "one thing at a time" (and when we have the money!) - Jenn.
